Policy makers have identified this interconnection between different aspects of dangerous trade, but largely as a challenge for law enforcement. We have all learned that there is a chain of association between the drug trade and the gun trade, between organised crime and the traffic in illegal migrants, between forced labour in the urban centers of the West and the desperation arising from global integration. These interlinked spectres have come to animate the anxious imagination of the globalized West. If we picture globalisation proper as a series of branded goods- all trainers, burgers and fizzy drinks- then the dangers of these other illicit commodities are always lurking in the shadows.
